Cape Cod Healthcare has issued a statement advising people that the Joint Base Cape Cod field hospital is not yet operational.
Christina Peasy, executive director of marketing communications and content strategy, issued the statement after reports of people arriving at the base looking for the medical facility.
"As we prepare for a potential surge related to COVID-19, we have yet to determine what role the facility will play in our collective response," she said.
She said Cape Cod Healthcare does not want to jeopardize the security of the military base and that it also wants to protect the health of the people who work there.
"It is not a hospital, it is not open, and specifics are still in the planning stages," she said. Do not go to the base. You will be turned away. Please stay home."
Anyone looking for assistance in relation to COVID-19 is asked to contact their primary care doctor. Those without primary care physicians should contact an urgent care facility. Testing is available, but needs to be ordered by a doctor before it can be performed.
