The Town of Falmouth’s senior center and human services department have jointly announced a new support group for men offered via Zoom on Thursdays at 10 AM.

This will be a safe and welcoming group for Falmouth men age 60 and older to receive support and connection if they are experiencing sadness, loneliness or worry, or experiencing any other difficult life events and losses.

The pandemic has taken an emotional toll on many and has forced many senior residents to limit their social interaction, which for some has resulted in significantly increased isolation. The mental and physical impacts of social isolation due to COVID-19 are well documented and a study by the National Institutes of Health suggests that the mental health in older people has been negatively impacted during social distancing for COVID-19.

Further, the main mental and physical health outcomes reported were anxiety, depression, poor sleep quality and physical inactivity during periods of isolation.

This new virtual support group will be facilitated by Mark Abbott, a clinical social worker in Falmouth’s human services department. Interested residents can call the Falmouth Senior Center at 508-540-0196 to register.
