The Megansett knockabout fleet continued its record showing of nine boats for last Sunday’s three races. The wind was light, very light, and variable as race time approached and the Race Committee of Jim Powers and Mary Chase were not optimistic about being able to set a proper course. They took a chance and set the weather mark and starting line hoping that our ever-reliable southwest breeze might make an appearance.

The fleet made its way out of the harbor more on the outgoing tide rather than what little breeze there was. Miraculously, just past the appointed 12:30 start time, the breeze did start to fill in, and amazingly it was out of the southwest (sort of). It was “game on” and soon the starting signals were made and the fleet charged to the starting line and onto the course.

Competition was fierce as the boats maintained a tight formation on each weather leg. Conventional strategies for Megansett harbor racing wouldn’t work as lifts and headers were plentiful and could reward or doom a boat’s performance. Mark roundings in all three races were tight with packs of 3-5 boats fighting for position with only a few feet separating them. Boat and sail handling had to be flawless in order to maintain and gain positions in this fleet.

The downwind mark was set exactly downwind, making it a toss up as to which side of the course to sail on the spinnaker runs. Finding the favorable shifts on the downwind runs was as important as finding them on the weather legs. Great gains or losses were realized on these challenging runs.

Jobie Chase’s Knightmare led the fleet in all three races but was closely followed across the finish line by various combinations of Finally!, Obsolete, Mae Win III and Late Show all sharing the 2nd to 5th places only seconds apart. The leaders of this pack were just 25 seconds and 38 seconds astern of Knightmare in Races 1 & 2.
