The Falmouth Chamber of Commerce is leading a voluntary campaign to get Falmouth business owners to phase out nonrecyclable black plastic food take-out containers.

Optic scanners in recycling sorting facilities bounce light off of plastics to properly sort them. Black plastics absorb that light and get mislabeled as trash, according to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection site, Recycle Smart.

Just recently there have been many articles, including one from Greenpeace, that state that plastic recycling is not effective or worthwhile. So changing away from black containers to an alternative makes no sense since the mixed plastics can't/won't be recycled.
