Passersby rescued a dog that had fallen through the ice on a Falmouth pond Sunday morning, December 22.

Emergency personnel were called to the pond at 27 Gunning Point Avenue at 10 AM.

By the time the fire department arrived, passersby had commandeered a kayak from the shore and used it to rescue the dog, Falmouth Fire Lieutenant Terrance A. Rogers said.

“There were many people who were walking by helping out,” he said.

The dog, which Lt. Rogers described as a small, mixed breed, or Shih Tzu-like dog, lives across the pond from where it was rescued.

Animal control officers warmed the dog at the scene and it was reunited with its owners.
