A Mashpee man crashed into a tree while overdosing with an 8-year-old passenger inside the vehicle, according to Falmouth police.

On Saturday, September 25, at 8 PM, Falmouth police officers responded to the one-car crash on Ashumet Road and found a heavily damaged vehicle with an unconscious man, James McMahon, 31, of Hooppole Road in the driver’s seat. A “frantic and terrified 8-year-old boy” was in the car, the police report states.

The first officers on scene administered two doses of naloxone to Mr. McMahon, who regained consciousness. Falmouth Fire Rescue Department medics treated and transported him to the hospital for head injuries as well as the overdose. The mother took custody of the child. Police notified the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.

Mr. McMahon was issued criminal citations for operating under the influence of drugs, negligent operation of a vehicle, child endangerment and other related offenses.
