Falmouth firefighters responded early Wednesday morning, May 6, to a report of a house fire at 87 Childs River Road.
Crews arrived on scene just before 6:30 AM and found the 2½-story home engulfed in flames. It was vacant and is believed to be a summer or seasonal home, Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Smith said.
Because of the extent of the fire, Falmouth called in mutual aid from Mashpee and Joint Base Cape Cod. Crews had to first work to put out the fire from the outside of the home to dampen the flames enough before they could go in. It had spread through all three levels of the house. The bulk of the fire was extinguished within an hour. However, there is extensive damage, the deputy chief said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Falmouth Fire Rescue Department, Falmouth police, and state police.
