A Falmouth man connected to the October 16 shooting death of Darrell A. Russ, 33, of Hyannis, was arrested in Mississippi on Friday, November 1.
District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and Barnstable Police Chief Matthew Sonnabend announced that William Hayes, 38, of Falmouth, was arrested at a relative’s house in Yazoo, Mississippi, on Friday, November 1. Mr. Hayes was arrested by the United States Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force on a Massachusetts murder warrant.
Barnstable Police detectives and State Police detectives from the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office were in Mississippi during the investigation.
“Proceedings will begin to extradite Mr. Hayes to Massachusetts,” Mr. O’Keefe announced on Monday. “The case remains under investigation by the aforementioned agencies.”
According to the District Attorney’s Office press release, Mr. Hayes was arrested following the shooting of Mr. Russ last month. At 1:16 PM on October 16, police responded to a physical altercation at 362 Yarmouth Road, Hyannis, where first responders found Mr. Russ lying on the ground. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital, where he died.
An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on October 18 indicates that Mr. Russ died from three gunshot wounds.
