US Coast Guard Investigator Services are looking into a incident in which someone on a Steamship Authority vessel near Woods Hole was believed to be purposefully pointing a green laser pointer into the eyes of a Coast Guard boat captain on the evening of Thursday, June 20.

The captain was driving a boat during a routine patrol in the area and decided to return to base in Woods Hole when the laser continued to interfere with his vision, said a spokesman for the Coast Guard, Zachary Hupp.

Not only a safety hazard when a laser is in a boat captain's eyes, Petty Officer Hupp said, it is also a crime to interfere with a federal law agency.

The spokesman did not comment onto the status of the investigation.
