A man was injured in a fire at South Cape Motel on Wednesday morning, September 1. He was transported via MedFlight to a Boston hospital, where he was treated for burns.

The Falmouth Fire Rescue Department responded at 4:30 AM to a fire alarm activation at the South Cape Motel at 499 Waquoit Highway, according to a statement from the department.

When firefighters arrived at 4:37 AM, they found heavy smoke coming from one of the units. When they opened the door, they discovered the fire and knocked it down quickly.

The occupant of the unit was outside when firefighters arrived. He was having difficulty breathing and had burns on his arms and legs.

He was transported to the Falmouth Hospital helipad, from which he was taken to a Boston-area hospital.

As firefighters began investigating the motel room they found an unknown liquid substance in a plastic container, and requested that a state Hazardous Materials team come to the scene. The team arrived and determined the liquid was not dangerous, according to the statement.

The Massachusetts State Police Fire Investigation Unit also was present at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
