Peanut Butter Razor Blade MES

A razor blade is shown embedded in a tree and covered in peanut butter in Goodwill Park in Falmouth.

A man was arrested in Goodwill Park earlier today for coating razor blades in peanut butter to bait animals, according to a statement from Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services.

The 64-year-old man, Brian M. McGrath, was booked at the Massachusetts State Police Barracks on Saturday, August 31. He was charged with animal cruelty, reckless behavior creating a risk of serious bodily injury, and injuries to trees, the MES statement reads.

Falmouth MES and Massachusetts Environmental Police opened a joint investigation into an individual baiting animals at Goodwill Park based on a tip. While surveilling the park, investigators stated, officers witnessed Mr. McGrath embedding a razor blade into a tree trunk, slathering it with peanut butter, and watching from nearby. Officers witnessed several squirrels “in contact with a razor while feeding,” according to the statement from Falmouth MES.

Officers removed the razor blades and searched the park to ensure that no other razor blades remained.
