A missing man who was considered to be in danger due to the cold weather was found Monday morning, December 27, after a five-hour, multiagency search.

Falmouth police were notified just after 2 AM that an 83-year-old man with medical issues was missing from a home on Backus River Road in East Falmouth. He was thought to have left the house on foot sometime between 7:30 PM and 2 AM.

The man was in danger due to the severe cold weather and the fact that he was wearing only shorts and a T-shirt with no shoes, and was draped in a blanket, police said.

An extensive search involving multiple agencies and a helicopter, K-9 officer, drones, infrared scopes and first responders on foot was launched. Falmouth police and fire personnel were first on the scene and were assisted by members of the Falmouth Consolidated Communications Center, Mashpee Police Department, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team, and the Massachusetts State Police.

People in the surrounding area received a FalmouthAlert call, asking them to check their homes and cars in case the man was seeking warmth inside.

Around 7:09 AM, a neighbor on Pine Ridge Road checked his house after receiving the alert and found the missing man sitting in an armchair in his garage.

Police said the man was transported immediately to Falmouth Hospital, where he received emergency care.
