Falmouth police responded to a Boxberry Hill Road residence on Saturday afternoon following a report of a suspicious package left on a front lawn.
The package, a shoe box that had been spray-painted black, was adorned with a white cross.
“In an abundance of caution, the state police bomb squad was requested, and they responded to investigate the package,” Falmouth Police Lieutenant Douglas M. DeCosta said.
The package was found around 1 PM on Saturday. The road was closed during the bomb squad’s investigation.
“The box contained nothing of concern and was later determined to be a practical joke by the homeowner’s friends,” Lt. DeCosta said.
The shoe box contained a broken YETI-brand insulated cup.
The homeowner had lost her YETI cup, and a neighbor found it, broken. The neighbor returned it in a makeshift shoe box coffin, complete with a homemade sympathy card.
“It was ultimately determined to be a poorly thought out prank, and nobody was in danger,” Lt. DeCosta said. “We are continuing to investigate the incident, and charges may be pending.”
Lt. DeCosta urges the public to report any suspicious items or packages they see to the Falmouth police.
