Alvin - Deployment

The research vessel Atlantis deploys the deep submersible Alvin for its 5,000th dive as part of an expedition in the Gulf of California.

During an expedition to the Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California on Sunday, November 25, Alvin made its 5,000th dive over its 54-year tenure as the country’s only deep-diving research submersible capable of carrying humans to the seafloor.

Commissioned in June 1964, the US Navy-owned and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution-operated sub has been through a series of upgrades and advances that have completely remade the vehicle and vastly expanded its capabilities, a spokesman for WHOI said in a statement Monday, November 26.
