Barbara J. Martineau, 78, of North Falmouth died April 28 at Royal of Cotuit Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Mashpee. Ms. Martineau had battled cancer for 12 years.

She was the wife of Gerard H. Martineau for 58 years.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she was the daughter of Hans S. and Virgene M. (Beck) Jensen. She was educated at Conard High School, then at the University of Rhode Island, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree.

Ms. Martineau worked as an executive assistant to the director of facilities and ship operations at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution until her retirement.

She found pleasure in traveling, reading and tending to her gardens. She and her husband enjoyed sailing and visiting the islands of Cape Cod and Rhode Island.

In addition to her husband, she leaves a sister, Carolyn Bongiorno of Marlborough; five nieces and nephews, Richard Jensen, Stephen Bongiorno, Pamela Bongiorno, Eric Jensen and Kelly Jensen-Sembos; and four great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and also by a brother, William G. Jensen.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
