Dorothy Virginia Mahoney, formerly of East Falmouth, died August 2 at the age of 98. For the last seven years, Ms. Mahoney had lived at South Shore Health Care Center in Rockland.

She was born in Lowell, the daughter of Marie-Rose (Laverdiere) Hull and Theodore Hull. She was raised by her mother in Boston and graduated from Boston Girls High School.

Ms. Mahoney was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during World War II.

She attended Fanny Farmer’s Cooking School and a commercial art school in Boston before marrying Robert S. Beavers in 1948.

She and Mr. Beavers had two children and settled in Weymouth. After her husband’s death in 1953, she was joined by her mother and continued to raise her children in Weymouth.

In 1966 she married William T. Mahoney. Her second husband’s love of Cape Cod brought them to Falmouth, and they built a house in Hatchville in 1973. She devoted herself to gardening on the property into her early 90s.

She leaves her children, Gail Donovan and her husband, John Donovan, and Robert S. Beavers and his wife, Ute Aurand; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by Mr. Mahoney, who died in 1995.

She will be buried at Massachusetts National Cemetery.

A memorial service will be celebrated on October 11 at St. Anthony’s Church in East Falmouth.
