Eliot Swift Lawrence of Mashpee, a veteran and a former president of Falmouth National Bank, died on March 8. He was 89.
Mr. Lawrence, known as Swift, was born to Eugenia Swift Lawrence and Chester Eliot Lawrence. He graduated from Tabor Academy in 1951 and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth College.
After graduation he served as an officer in the US Navy before returning to Dartmouth to earn a master of business administration at the Tuck School of Business in New Hampshire. As an alumnus, he served as Alumni Council president and was honored with the Alumni Council Award.
Mr. Lawrence enjoyed a long career as a banker, including serving as president of the Falmouth National Bank, which his great-grandfather helped to found.
In Falmouth he was a Town Meeting member, a director of Ocean Research Equipment, Inc., and a trustee of the Marine Biological Laboratory.
He and his wife, Kathryn, built a house and lived in Westport for over 37 years. He was a member of the Acoaxet Club, Spindle Rock Club and the United Congregational Church of Little Compton.
He also enjoyed skiing, golf, tennis and sailing. His parents were founding members of the Falmouth Yacht Club, where he started his sailing adventures. He won trophies sailing beetle cats out of the Chapoquoit Yacht Club.
Mr. Lawrence leaves his wife Kathryn (Kit); daughter Marcia Somerville and her husband, Scott; sons Stephen S. Lawrence and James E. Lawrence and his wife, Anne Borow; his stepchildren Felecia Blake, Kim Roth and Buddy Hampton; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a niece; and a nephew.
He was predeceased by his brother G. Campbell Lawrence; and his former wife, Nancy Heald Landers.
A celebration service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, March 25, at Waquoit Congregational Church in East Falmouth.
