Herbert W. Sample, 94, of Falmouth died December 31 at Royal Falmouth Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of COVID-19.

The son of Everett C. and Alice M. (Shepard) Sample, he spent his entire life in Falmouth. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1944.

Mr. Sample worked in the First National grocery store in Falmouth until his retirement in 1981.

He loved the beach and spent many hours sunning and swimming at Old Silver Beach and Falmouth Heights Beach. He also spent many winters on the Florida east coast.

Known for his sense of humor and sharp wit that he used to tell jokes, stories and one-liners, even in his advanced years Mr. Sample maintained his sense of humor and could still come up with some classic lines.

He leaves six nephews and nieces, Dana Miskell of Falmouth, Sheryl Lopes of Falmouth, Rick Sample of Falmouth, Deborah Miskell of Tiburon, California, David Miskell of Charlotte, Vermont, and Carol Looney of Bullhead City, Arizona; as well as grandnephews and grandnieces and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by six siblings, Phyllis Boland, Barbara McVey, Donald Sample, Richard Sample, Betty Miskell and Charles Sample.
