Daniel Loureiro

In Loving Memory: Daniel S. Loureiro of East Falmouth, age 84, passed away Thursday, July 15. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Frances (Gorczyca) Loureiro; son Daniel Scott Loureiro and his wife Marcella of Freehold, NJ; daughter Stacey (Loureiro) Henry and her husband Patrick of Rutherford, NJ; and grandchildren Michael, Phillip, Daniel, Patrick (Loureiro), Alexander, James, and James’s wife Amanda (Henry). He is preceded in death by his son Michael Loureiro.

Dan was born in 1936 in New Bedford, MA to John and Sophie Loureiro. He graduated in 1955 from New Bedford High School as a four letterman in football, track and field, basketball, and baseball. In 1956 he graduated from Dean Academy and Junior College and went on to attend New Bedford Institute of Technology, where he played semi-pro football for the Fairhaven Varsity Club and participated in several sporting tournaments, including the International Convention of the Circle K Club. He graduated class of 1959.

Dan’s love of sports was lifelong. As an avid golfer, he once shot his age and was lucky enough to hit a hole in one (but it didn’t quite count — it went into the wrong hole.) He also loved baseball—you could spot him on 6th Avenue in New York City wearing his Boston Red Sox hat, like only a true fan would.

Dan raised his family in Rutherford, NJ and worked in New York City in the textile industry. His last position was with Burlington Industries, where he managed the denim sales division and was known as Denim Dan: “Shoot me a price.” His negotiations led him to sell the first yard of denim to Calvin Klein Jeans, and from there business expanded to Liz Claiborne, Jordache, Lee, and many others.

Shortly after Dan retired in 2002, he and Fran moved to the Cape to live full time at the home they built on Great Bay in East Falmouth, where they previously spent summers as a family. Dan became a member of the Portuguese American Association of Falmouth and volunteered for the Falmouth Road Race and People For Cats. He also loved traveling to Florida and the Caribbean at every opportunity.

To know Dan was to have a friend for life. Whether it was with a hug or a laugh (he proudly kept a repertoire of jokes with a numbering system), Dan had a way of making everyone feel like family. His big heart and kind spirit live on in all of us. Danny will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 23rd from 2:00 – 5:00 PM at Chapman Funerals and Cremations – Falmouth, 475 Main Street, Falmouth. A Memorial Service takes place at 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan’s name may be made to the Portuguese American Association of Falmouth, 55 Ashumet Rd., East Falmouth, MA, 02536 (508) 563-7396 or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, https://www.cff.org/give-monthly/
