Lawrence J. Hines Sr., 77, of Falmouth died July 8.

He was the husband of Lorraine A. (Hanbury) Hines, to whom he was married for 32 years at the time of her death in January 2011.

Mr. Hines was raised in Charlestown and graduated from Natick High School in 1962. He attended Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.

He joined the United States Navy and served four years as a quartermaster during the Vietnam War.

After working for Martha’s Vineyard Steamship Authority in the 1970s and early 1980s, Mr. Hines joined the Merchant Marine for many years, working his way up to become a first mate. He was a member of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots, a US labor union representing licensed mariners.

He also was a longtime member of the Falmouth Elks Club.

He leaves two sons, Lawrence J. Hines Jr. of Falmouth and Daniel J. Hines of Somerville; his grandchildren, Jack Hines and Ann Hines; and three siblings, Virginia Doucette, Peter Hines and Norma Jean Garvin, all of Florida.

A burial service will be Thursday, July 16, at 1:45 PM at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
