Robert M. Cannata of Sarasota, Florida, a former Falmouth resident, died unexpectedly November 10 at home. He was 64.

He was born in Norwood to Anne (Haslett) and James Cannata and raised in Falmouth. He was a member of the final class to graduate from Lawrence High School: the Class of 1973.

Mr. Cannata began his career working at the former Danny Kay’s on East Falmouth Highway, the first Italian restaurant in Falmouth. It was opened in 1959 by Daniel V. and Carmela F. Bartolomei, who operated the business until 1977, and is now the site of Golden Sails.

After completing his education, Mr. Cannata was a chef at the East Bay Lodge in Osterville. He also managed a Bobby Byrne’s restaurant in Raynham before moving to Sarasota, Florida. There he began a career in real estate and opened Realty Executives Solutions in 1979, which he owned and operated until his death.

He leaves a daughter, Caitlin Cannata of Colorado; a son, Chris Cannata and his wife, Caitlin Cannata, also of Colorado; a sister, Karen Smith of Falmouth; a niece and two nephews; and extended family.

A celebration of his life will be in March.
