Robert W. Smith of Falmouth died January 8 at Tobey Hospital in Wareham. He was 87.

He was the husband of 55 years of Claire H. Smith.

Mr. Smith was a boatswain’s mate in the US Navy assigned to the USS Perry (DD-844) during the Korean War from 1952 to 1955.

He went on to a career in law enforcement; he would become a decorated police officer for the Brookline Police Department for 36 years before retiring in 1996.

Mr. Smith enjoyed going on cruises with his wife, and followed the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

He was a former resident of Natick.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his sons, Robert W. Smith Jr. and his wife, Lori Smith, of Oakland, California, James Smith and his wife, Lauma Smith, of Falmouth, Christopher Smith and his wife, Beth Smith, of Millis, and Scott Smith and his wife, Heather Smith, of Walpole; and nine grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, January 12, from 5 to 7 PM at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 584 West Falmouth Highway.

A funeral Mass will be said on Thursday, January 13, at 11 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road in North Falmouth.

Burial will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
