Walter Blaise Nunes of East Falmouth, 90, died in his sleep on December 1 after a brief struggle with COVID-19. For the past 10 years he had lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald W. and Sharon L. Nunes.
He was the widower of Rose (Boudreau) Nunes.
During his time in Falmouth, Mr. Nunes was known by his friends and neighbors as “the mayor” of the Maravista section of East Falmouth. He was a volunteer at the Hand-in-hand Thrift Shop of Falmouth Service Center on Sandwich Road, alongside his son and daughter-in-law.
The trio traveled to visit his cousin in Florida, his granddaughter in New Orleans and his daughter in Mississippi. At age 89, he spent three weeks with his other daughter in New Mexico.
The son of Manuel and Mary (Julio) Nunes, he began working at the age of 16. His first job was in the silver plating department at Reed & Barton. He retired from Wrentham State School where he was a mason for more than two decades; for many years he also ran his own masonry business with his father and brother.
From a young age, he loved spending time on Cape Cod. He and his family vacationed in Dennisport for about 20 years. With his wife and friends Mr. Nunes had traveled in the United States and abroad, revisiting Canada and Madeira.
Mr. Nunes could often be found in his workshop, building things for friends and family or fixing an object and giving it new life or creating something useful. During the summer, he raised fruit and vegetables in his garden.
He was a longtime member and former president of St. Peter’s Charitable Society in Taunton, whose mission was to help those in need.
In addition his three children, he leaves two grandchildren, a great-grandchild, two nephews, his cousin, and other family.
He was preceded in death by his brother, David Nunes.
Funeral services will be private and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later time.
