William Fontes

William A. Fontes, 81, of East Falmouth died June 14.

He was the husband of Gladys M. (Teixeira) Fontes for 61 years.

Born in New Bedford, he was the son of William K. and Mary (Pacheco) Fontes. He graduated from New Bedford High School in 1955 and from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in 1964.

Mr. Fontes served in the National Guard from 1955 until 1962. In 1961, he was called to active duty to protect the country in the wake of the Berlin Crisis.

After living in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, his family settled in Ware.

With a work career in corporate finance, Mr. Fontes was employed as a controller for US Steel and State Line Potato Chip Co.

After his retirement, Mr. Fontes moved to Falmouth, spending winters in Fort Myers, Florida. He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, spending time gardening, and teaching his grandchildren to sail, fish, make arts and crafts, and dig for quahogs.

He was an active member of St. Anthony’s Church, the Portuguese American Club and the Knights of Columbus; as well as the Rotary Club of Ware, from which he received the Paul Harris Fellow Award.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Christine Porell and her husband, Thomas Porell, Garrett Fontes and his wife, Claire Fontes, and William Fontes and his wife, Nancy Fontes; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was said on Tuesday, June 18, at 10 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Highway.

Burial will be private.
