How lucky is Falmouth to have a world-class running event, staffed with hundreds of eager volunteers, that contributes to so many local causes from its revenue? A race that has a long tradition of bringing families and friends together in Falmouth? Why would the town want to stymie this well-organized event in any way? The decades-long success of this race speaks volumes.

Every year on race day, the buses taking the runners to the starting line assemble in front of our house at 5 AM. By 2 PM, there is not so much as a paper cup in sight. No evidence that hours earlier, thousands of runners came through. Amazing.

The Falmouth Road Race has grown over the years because it is a great event. The staff and volunteers have managed this growth well for decades. Reducing the number of runners (by one-third!) is an unnecessary blow to this storied race. It has been a long couple of years: let’s allow the Falmouth Road Race to return to its former glory.

Maybe things will change given recent events in Town Hall.
