Of 252 Town Meeting members, only 138 attended Monday’s session in the high school field house. A dozen fewer, and there wouldn’t have been a quorum.

We know that concern about COVID-19 was the reason many didn’t attend; it might be the reason most didn’t attend. It doesn’t really make a difference; if only six didn’t participate, Falmouth’s Town Meeting was compromised. But we’re sure it was a great many more, and that is unfortunate.

Perhaps Town Moderator David Vieira should go back to the drawing board and come up with a plan that is safe and inclusive for November Town Meeting. It would be good if he consulted some Town Meeting members to learn what alternatives might set them at ease. The select board should have something to say about it as well.

In the meantime, there could be some challenges to votes taken Monday night in the way of petitioners’ articles next spring.

The current format did not serve Falmouth well this week.
