Residents who live on Deep Pond Road recently asked the planning board to change the name of the street to Deep Pond Drive. On the surface, it was a reasonable request. Their street is near Deer Pond Road and postal deliveries had too often been made to the wrong address.
But in this day and age, it’s not so simple. It would require changes to town records and maps that planners and the fire department depend on. The planning board decided against the change.
Many years ago, or perhaps not so many depending on your age, towns were more cavalier about street names. Prominent streets were, of course, an exception. Main Street in Woods Hole was long ago renamed Water Street to avoid confusion with Main Street in Falmouth.
The town was still small 50 years ago. Police and firefighters knew where such-and-such street was in East Falmouth even though there might be a street by the same name in North Falmouth. The town grew and with that came new complexities. Street names became digital assets, and emergency responders and others came to depend on them.
Nothing is so simple today. One might be wistful for the good old days, but that would overlook the advantages technology has brought to safety and efficiency.
