Reading your front-page article on the housing summit, I am struck by a few things that do not seem applicable.

First, that police and firefighters are considered workforce at starting salaries of $54,000 and $57,000, respectively. Do those salaries include the generous 40 percent town benefit package? That would make their earnings more like $75,000.

It appears Chief Dunne finds it a hardship that 17 police officers out of 55 live out of town and cannot find a place to rent or buy with those salaries. I had neighbors who were police officers and shared a house rental. There’s a myth that police and firefighters cannot afford to live in Falmouth. Share a rental in Falmouth until you can buy a house.

The reality is folks like Patrick Fortin, whose testimonial was printed, and those working in retail, hospitality, healthcare and base salary education are the workforce population. Many are not protected by unions and salary negotiations. These are the folks who most need affordable housing. Other than the few $232,000 condominiums in North Falmouth, there is nothing available for sale at that price in Falmouth.

Those of us who have lived here for more than 40 years know of the rising costs of building new homes with the additional state regulations for energy efficiency.

The prefabricated house appears to be a good start if land is available and density regulations relaxed. Perhaps more focus on rental and purchase for those on the cusp of qualification would be realistic next time.
