Just when you thought hockey season was over, the boys and girls of Falmouth—and some of the neighboring towns, too—will be back at it at Gallo Ice Arena this weekend and next. Gallo will be hosting the Buzzards Bay Showdown, bringing together some of the best teams from across Massachusetts to play for something that the MIAA season did not allow for—a de facto state championship.

Playing under the umbrella of their towns’ youth hockey affiliations, and under USA Hockey rules, a high school-age tournament begins Friday, March 12, and will continue through the weekend, then again next weekend. The schedule for the girls’ games has not yet been posted.

Some of this weekend’s games will also be played in Waltham at the Ryan Arena.

The teams are split into three divisions. The Leddy Division consists of Lincoln-Sudbury, Framingham, Lowell and Marshfield. The Brothers Division is Waltham, Natick, Chelmsford and Tewksbury. The Hickey Division is Falmouth, Hingham, Bridgewater-Raynham and Newton South.

“It’s a chance for all of these kids to keep playing,” Falmouth coach Steve Colonna said.

The Falmouth boys’ team is mostly made up of players from town, with a handful of other towns also represented. Falmouth players include Charlie Bardellis, Bud Driscoll, Connor Hennigan, Brady Turner, Chris Shanahan, Max McDonald, Daren McDonald, Jack Braga and Kyle Souza. Plymouth North’s Jack Arnold and Kevin Norwood will be playing. Sandwich’s Rob Cardillo will be on the squad, as will Bourne’s Jonathan Sheehy.

The Falmouth girls’ team is made up primarily of players who played for the Falmouth High School, which went undefeated during the regular season. Peter Champani will serve as the head coach for that team.
