Tori Roulston is done scoring goals for Falmouth High School, but the Southern New Hampshire-bound soccer player is not yet done scoring goals at Falmouth High School. On Tuesday, June 25, Roulston netted a hat trick for Falmouth in Cape Cod Women’s Soccer League action in a 5-0 win over the Mashpee-Barnstable United team.
With both teams shorthanded, the clubs battled on a muddy pitch through constant rain. Falmouth had two substitute players, while United had just enough to play evenly with 11. Falmouth improved to 4-0 on the season and took a two-game lead over second-place Lower Cape, which is 2-2. United and Sandwich are both 1-3.
Roulston scored two goals for Falmouth in the first half to put her team ahead to stay and added a goal and a helper in the second half.
While it was the college freshman-to-be that carried the load, it was a veteran that got the scoring started for Falmouth. Off a nice feed from Suzannah Richards, team captain Tiffany Cardeiro scored in the 22nd minute to break the ice. Richards pushed the ball up the right wing and Cardeiro unleashed a perfect volley to the far post that was just out of the reach of Heather Delude to make it 1-0.
Roulston then collected her first goal three minutes later. Richards again figured in the scoring as her through ball up the middle sent in Roulston for a breakaway. The scorer made a move around Delude and popped in the game’s second tally. Then, in the 38th minute, Roulston was sent on another break. Cutting from the left side, she attempted to dance around the goalie only to draw contact. Delude attempted to lunge towards the ball to take it away but instead took Falmouth’s leading scorer down, resulting in a penalty kick that she converted for a 3-0 lead.
The second half was more of the same as Falmouth dominated. Roulston’s assist nearly was a goal. With some fancy footwork she got around the United defense and sent a slow rolling ball toward the far post. After having delivered a couple of assists, Richards cashed this one in by touching it inside the far post to make it 4-0. Roulston capped the scoring later in the period to finish her hat trick and account for the final score. Emily Sturdivant assisted on that goal.
Defensively, Falmouth was strong throughout. Jenn Cardeiro was her usual hard-nosed self and directed traffic in front of the goal all game long. Rachael Cumberland was not tested often, but did make a few big stops to preserve the shutout.
