Once again the Falmouth-Mashpee gymnastics team will have a chance to battle for the south sectional championship at the MIAA sectionals at Algonquin High School on February 22. The Flippers made it six years in a row of qualifying, as they were seeded ninth of the 12 teams that earned their way into the tournament, which will be held at 3 PM in Algonquin.
League rival Bridgewater has earned the top spot with an amazing average of 145.85. That was the top overall score of any of the 24 teams in Massachusetts that qualified. North region’s number-one seed Masconomet had the second-best average of 148.525.
Falmouth-Mashpee finished ahead of Oliver Ames, Barnstable and Pembroke in the 12-team south field. Ahead of F-M are Bridgewater, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Algonquin, MADS co-operative team, Framingham, Wellesley and Franklin.
Additionally, Falmouth-Mashpee senior Hannah Binette, of MHS, was selected for a spot on Team Massachusetts’ Senior National Team. The squad will head to Florida in May to compete against other states’ top high school athletes.
Binette said that she had no idea that she was in consideration for the spot on the team, which goes to the best seniors in the state. She said that her coach, Shailey Pires, had been asked by the national team’s coaches about the skills that Hannah has, but that was she was surprised to find out that she’d made the cut.
“I had no idea, it was a big surprise for me,” she said. “It’s a big honor.”
