The Falmouth and Sandwich High School cross-country teams split their meets on Tuesday, September 21, at Falmouth High School. Falmouth’s boys’ team edged the SHS boys by a 27-28 score, while the girls from Sandwich won 20-40 for the day.
Henry Gartner led the Clippers by winning first place overall by 50 full seconds on the 2.7-mile course. Gartner, who was the fastest person from Falmouth at this year’s Falmouth Road Race, finished the 2.7-mile course in 15 minutes and 57 seconds. Max Sullivan and Harry Glover, both of Sandwich, finished second and third, with Sullivan crossing in 16:47 and Glover coming in 17:05. Miles Van Mooy was fourth overall for FHS, running 17:10 and Gavin Frield ran 17:20 for fifth overall, and third on his team.
Peter Milburn, of SHS, was sixth with a time of 18:15 while the Clippers Adrean Blackwood placed seventh, and fourth on the team, in 18:30. SHS made it very close by taking spots eight and nine, thanks to matching times of 19:30 by Marty Mulroy and Paul Grabowski, but Connor Furey wrapped it up for FHS by running 20:52 to give the Clippers a one-point win.
On the girls’ side, things were easy for SHS since Falmouth had just three runners, though the top two Clippers were right in the mix with the lead pack.
Claire Davies, of SHS, won the race with a time 18:53, which was more than two minutes faster than the next best time. Josephine Oberton, of FHS, took second with a time of 20:55.
SHS took place three, four and five. Lexi Eastman ran 21:36, Kate Sheehan finished in 21:47 and Jona Forant ran 21:48. Falmouth’s Hadley Smith clocked a time of 22:24 for sixth overall and second on her team. Nora Cronan wrapped up the win for the Knights with her seventh-place finish in 22:27. Leyden Steedman was the other Clipper to run the race, finishing in 25:12, which was 12th overall.
