Relief And Joy

The Falmouth High School field hockey team celebrates Katie Shanahan’s go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter that propelled them to a 2-1 win over Canton on Tuesday night.

Katie Shanahan had taken the exact same shot numerous times this season, with the same result. This time, though, her bomb from the top of the circle on a penalty corner set play did not just make a big noise as it crashed into the back of the net; it also propelled the Falmouth High School field hockey team into the Division 2 state tournament’s Elite Eight.

Shanahan scored, off an assist from Avery Johnsen, 2:20 into the fourth quarter to break a 1-1 tie and give the Clippers the lead. Falmouth’s defense held the fort from that point forward, and the Clippers moved on for the second year in a row to the round of eight as they defeated number 10 Canton, 2-1.
