Freshman Henry Gartner spent the entire fall at the front of the pack in every race he ran. In the MIAA All-State Division 2 championship at Gardner Municipal Golf Course he had to settle for being in the top quarter of the field.
While Gartner would have preferred another top-five finish, as he had earned the week before in regional competition, he has plenty of reason to be excited about what’s to come. His time of 17 minutes and 38 seconds was the best turned in by any freshman that qualified for the event. Just 11 freshmen earned a spot in the field of 178. Four sophomores finished ahead of Gartner.
Gartner finished 38th overall in the field with his strong showing. He ran an average kilometer split of 3:32 on the 5K course.
The winner of the Division 2 championship race was Arlington Catholic senior Sean Kay, who ran an amazing time of 16 minutes and three seconds. He was 15 seconds faster than the second place finisher, John Lucey of Newburyport.
Gartner’s participation came in the penultimate athletic event for any Falmouth High School fall sport team or individual. The only remaining game to played this fall is the Thanksgiving Day football game.
It also put a cap on a great first season for the freshman. He was fifth overall in the Division 5 championship, and the fastest member of his class. He won the McIntyre Twilight Meet’s freshman race, and will be undoubtedly named a Cape and Islands League all-star when those awards are announced in the coming weeks.
