QYC Trophy Race

The Quissett fleet heads to the jibe mark, with Found It (289) displaying perfect spinnaker flying technique.

The Quissett Yacht Club reserves the Wednesday-night race between the July and August series, July 27, for the Janet B. Chalmers Trophy Race. Janet was an outstanding H12 racer in Jancy Lee, a dedicated and talented instructor and for many years a devoted Race Committee chairwoman and Principal Race Officer. Her particular fondness for and dedication to the Wednesday Night series prompted the yacht club to dedicate this race in her honor upon her passing.

This race often brings out one of the largest and most competitive fleets of the season, and this year was no exception. In anticipation of the upcoming National Regatta, the Race Committee of Doug Jones, Sarah Meigs and Ed Jackson (also joined by the cheering squad of Leah Bergmann and Sadie and Naomi Borken) chose to set a Gold Cup course using the Stoney Beach mark as the windward mark. An aggressive fleet caused Alec Clowes and Jolynn Khamky in Due Diligence to be over the starting line too early, and they were forced to restart, often a mistake difficult to overcome. Most of the fleet was within seconds of the line at the start with Noah Garfield on Handoah a rare exception, who was heard to exclaim as he crossed the starting line, “Not my finest start!”
