Mary Bowker, Master Gardener class of 2013 and past president of the Master Gardener Association of Cape Cod, will be the featured speaker at the May 20 luncheon for the Mashpee Women’s Club at New Seabury Country Club beginning at 11:30 AM.

Ms. Bowker will present an interactive discussion of “The Right Plant in the Right Place,” how to enjoy the benefits and beauty of native plants and learn to identify some of the more troublesome invasive plants, becoming better stewards of Cape Cod.

Ms. Bowker is also a member of the Sandwich Tree and Landscape Advisory Committee and former president of the Sandwich Garden Club. She is a former newspaper editor and reporter who has transitioned from picking commas out of copy to plucking cat briar from her yard. She has always loved gardening but never so much as now. She has gardened in the most inhospitable of places, from a rooftop in Charlestown to a shady ledge in the Worcester Hills. Her love affair with the land and waters of Cape Cod began when she was 10 and summered on the shores of Buzzards Bay. After a permanent move to East Sandwich, she gave up sailing for gardening on a historic dairy farm where, with her husband Roger, she is transforming 15 acres, one nasty invasive plant at a time.

Cape Abilities Farm in Dennis will enhance the presentation by offering a plant sale, featuring corresponding select plants discussed by Ms. Bowker. Cape Abilities provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities on Cape Cod by educating, counseling and providing residential, therapeutic, social and employment support that empowers them to achieve meaningful and valued roles in the community. In addition to the Farm in Dennis, Cape Abilities has a Thrift Shop in West Yarmouth and a Farm Market in Chatham.
