A Barnstable County grand jury indicted two Mashpee men Friday, July 26, on charges related to illegally possessing high-capacity firearms.

Wayra Gomez-Wixon, 26, and Phillip C. Hicks, Jr., 27, were each indicted on two charges of possessing large capacity firearms, possessing ammunition without a firearms identification card, and defacing a firearm serial number.

Mr. Hicks was also charged with operating under the influence of liquor.

The two men were arrested in Mashpee on May 20 after reports of gunshots and a vehicle traveling fast near Meetinghouse Road, police said.

A responding officer spotted an AR-15-style rifle under the passenger’s seat when he approached a vehicle driven by Mr. Hicks where it was stopped on Great Neck Road North, court documents state.

Officers also found a mostly empty bottle of liquor in the center console of the vehicle, two rounds of ammunition on Mr. Gomez-Wixon’s person, and a drum-style magazine that can hold 60 rounds of ammunition, the court documents said.
