Police are investigating a fatality near the Johns Pond area of Mashpee after a man’s body was found Monday morning, September 13.
The Mashpee Police Department responded to a report of a missing person around 7:40 AM on Monday. A man was found dead after a police search in the wooded area near Johns Pond.
Kathy Cooper of Mashpee posted on Facebook earlier this week that her husband, Robert Cooper, was identified as the man who died.
Mr. Cooper, known as Mark, was a father of four, a grandfather of eight and husband to Ms. Cooper for 30 years. He was the captain of a commercial fishing vessel out of Hyannis, the post said.
Mr. Cooper had decided to take a ride on his golf cart through the trails in the woods by Johns Pond on Sunday with his dog, JugHead. Mr. Cooper misjudged a turn and the golf cart flipped, pinning the man underneath it. JugHead did not leave Mr. Cooper’s side until he was found, the post said.
Ms. Cooper wrote in the post that the medical examiner said Mr. Cooper died instantly and did not suffer.
While the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office are still investigating, Mashpee Police Chief Scott W. Carline said it appeared to be a “tragic accident” and offered the department’s condolences to family members.
