A Sandwich man was arrested at Stop & Shop on Nathan Ellis Highway in Mashpee last Friday, May 15, after police responded to a report of a man attacking the store’s employees.
Following the arrest, police charged Andrew B. Griffith, 31, of Forestdale with two counts of assault and battery, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and assault and battery on a police officer.
According to a statement from Mashpee Police Chief Scott W. Carline, at approximately 4:35 PM, Mashpee police responded to a report of a man at Stop & Shop who was attacking employees and chasing them around the store. When police arrived, the man tried to flee.
Police brought Mr. Griffith into custody after a violent struggle during which Mr. Griffith was subdued with a taser, Chief Carline said.
In his statement, Chief Carline said Mashpee Fire/Rescue personnel responded to the scene to assist two victims of the attack. Both were treated and released at the scene.
After further investigation, police determined that the attack “appeared to be unprovoked” and Mr. Griffith has no known relationship with the victims.
The matter remains under investigation, Chief Carline said.
Mr. Griffith was released on bail and will be arraigned in Falmouth District Court.
