A town-wide election will be held Tuesday, October 1, to fill a seat on the Mashpee Board of Selectmen formerly held by John J. Cahalane, who passed away in June.
The current four-member board voted Monday, July 8 to set a date for the election official based on a recommendation from Mashpee Town Clerk Deborah F. Dami.
Nomination papers are now available until August 13.
Ms. Dami said that the October 1 date provides ample time for potential candidates to fill out nomination forms, and it does not conflict with any holidays. Also, many residents will still be in Mashpee before heading south for the winter.
The location for the election is still up in the air as the board of selectmen are considering alternatives to Christ the King Church Parish Hall where the last several elections have been held. The board, at it’s Monday meeting, suggested that the church was only a temporary spot while the Quashnet Elementary School was under construction.
Mr. Cahalane served on the board for 20 years. At a funeral service held last month, many town officials lauded the late selectman for his commitment to the town.
