Adele B. (Szemela) Barden of Marstons Mills, who for the past two years had lived at Royal of Cotuit Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Mashpee, died August 7. Ms. Barden, 97, leaves family in Sandwich.
Born in in Springfield, she was the daughter of John and Bertha (Grondalski) Szemela.
She graduated from Commerce High School in 1939.
After she married George F. Barden in 1952 they lived in Indian Orchard, where they raised their family and were communicants of Immaculate Conception Church.
Ms. Barden had a career as a secretary and retired from the retail store Lechmere in 1987.
She moved to Cape Cod in 1989 to live with her daughter and family and helped raise her three grandsons.
She enjoyed reading the newspaper, working out crossword puzzles and playing bingo.
Ms. Barden leaves a daughter, Mary Beth O’Brien of Marstons Mills; her grandsons, Michael O’Brien of Osterville, Daniel O’Brien of Marstons Mills and Kevin O’Brien of Sandwich; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Theophil Szemela of St. Petersburg, Florida; and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter Barbara Chmura; and five siblings.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, August 14, at 11 AM at Corpus Christi Church, 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road in East Sandwich.
Burial will be private.
