Janette Ann (Leonardo) Zschau of Mashpee died September 26 following a short illness. She was 87.

She was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, a member of a large Italian family. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and Bryant College.

After she married William Zschau, they moved to the family’s summer home in West Yarmouth near Englewood Beach, where they raised their two daughters.

Ms. Zschau was active in the Junior Women’s Club and the school PTAs, and she also worked at the Yarmouth Police Department and Dunfey’s in Hyannis for many years.

During the Vietnam War, she attended protests against the war; she advocated for women’s equality in the 1970s.

An accomplished cook, she was known for her Italian specialties. Ms. Zschau also was an avid reader, and loved in-depth conversations.

She leaves her daughters, Maryann Zschau and her husband, Steven Bergman, of Weymouth, and Patricia Mitrokostas of West Barnstable; two grandchildren, Emma Bergman and Max Mitrokostas; and many nieces and nephews in Rhode Island.

Services will be private.
