This past month, September, has been Recovery Month, a nationwide celebration of those in recovery from substance abuse disorders.

Now in its 30th year, Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery just as we celebrate improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as heart disease, asthma, diabetes and cancer.

It seems Cape Codders sometimes don’t like to acknowledge that we have a major substance abuse problem. On Cape Cod with 10 bucks in your pocket, you could buy a movie ticket, a large pizza or a 12-pack of beer. It’s also enough to buy enough heroin to keep you high for half the day.

September is a month to chip away at the deep denial and minimization of substance abuse as a national health problem, killing scores of Cape Codders young and old every single day.
