There are many more options for future development at the Mashpee Commons location than the one proposal being promoted by the profiteering owner seeking to dramatically expand the intensity of development at that site. This continual scare tactic that Mashpee residents have only one choice between either big box stores or whatever Mashpee Commons wants is a fallacy. The developer’s current zoning proposal does not eliminate or prevent any of the less desirable uses there but rather seeks to expand them, bigger, taller, denser, with less parking, much more traffic, and fewer affordable housing units than are allowed right now.

Ironically, this recent attempt at a rebuttal actually confirms Ms. Cardin’s explanation that the developers need the approval of the Town. If they want new zoning, we, the voters, do have the final say in what that zoning allows. That is how we protect the “character and charm of our community.”
