It’s time for Mashpee to step up, do the right thing and take the vital first step toward mitigating the premature demise of our waterways, estuaries and fragile environment.
By “Mashpee,” I don’t mean town government. I mean you. And me. And your neighbor. The voters and the taxpayers. Because WE are the ones with the responsibility and the benefit.
Yes, $54 million is a big investment. However, history will show it’s a bargain compared to the inevitable consequences of further delay. When the May 3 Town Meeting convenes under the tent at Mashpee Middle-High School, it will mark seven years since The Plan was delivered. (You can read all 349 pages on the town’s website.) We are now well beyond any need to further debate the merits of the plan. Now it’s time to act.
As an added bonus, the Sewer Commission and town management/leadership have crafted a financing strategy that does not impact the tax rate. And more good news arrived just recently when Mashpee was approved for a nearly $13 million grant, which is $7 million more than originally anticipated.
So, DO attend town meeting on May 3 and vote YES on Articles 6, 7 and 8. And then on May 8 at the polls, vote YES on Question 1. Approval of the latter is a prerequisite for qualification for favorable financing, which comes with no effect on the tax rate. It’s all a rare convergence of problem-solving opportunity. I am confident we will all do the right thing. It’s time.
