There’s one program in Division 4 that strikes fear in the others, and the Mashpee High School girls’ basketball team learned why last Thursday night, March 9, in the Division 4 Elite Eight. Cathedral High has hung many championship banners in its gym, and against the Falcons they put on a display that showed just why.
Cathedral dominated from start to finish to move on to the Final Four against Notre Dame of Worcester. The Panthers built a 20-point lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 75-54 win to move on.
The game got away from Mashpee early on. The team was able to mount a bit of a comeback to close the gap, but never got back to within single digits to put a scare into the Lady Panthers.
Cathedral’s frenetic pace was problematic for Mashpee. The Lady Falcons had difficulty adjusting to the speed that the home team played at, and made mistakes with the basketball, especially early. In one series of plays Mashpee committed six-straight turnovers late in the first quarter. During that time the lead expanded for Cathedral to a comfortable margin. After a free throw from Mia Fougere, Mashpee was down just 10-6 midway through the first half. Over the next three minutes the Falcons began to make mistakes, and they multiplied. By the time that the dust settled on the first quarter, Cathedral was ahead, 26-6.
Rebounding and ball protection were the two biggest issues all game long for the Lady Falcons. Cathedral’s size advantage was substantial, and they used it well. The Panthers were hardly a better shooting team than Mashpee, but the extra chances piled up throughout the game. In the third quarter, with Mashpee mounting a comeback that saw them shave the deficit down to 15, the Lady Falcons forced a missed shot, but Cathedral grabbed the rebound and put up another, and another, and another, and another before finally getting a foul called and ending up at the free throw line. The turnovers began to be less of an issue later in the game, but by that point the hole had been dug.
Mashpee closed the gap to 14 in the third quarter, after a pair of Mia Fougere (5 points, 3 rebounds) free throws. That was the closest they got the rest of the night.
The game may have been the swan song for the Falcons’ big three, but they did not go quietly. Peters led the team with 23 points in the game, including three 3-pointers, with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Turner-Foster had 13 points with four rebounds, three steals and three assists. Stecei nearly had a double-double, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds, a steal and a block.
