A couple of matches were contested closely, but the Middleboro High School girls’ tennis team proved to be better as the Sachems scored a 5-0 sweep against the Mashpee High ladies in Middleboro yesterday, May 9.
Eighth grader Jillian Burdge played the closest and most-competitive match of the day for the Falcons at second singles and had her opponent on the ropes. After losing the first set by a 2-6 score, Burdge found her groove and began to put away winners in the second. She fought back to take that set 7-5.
To determine the winner she agreed to play a tiebreaker. Burdge had her chances but fell in the tiebreaker 11-13.
At first singles Caroline Henley came up a little short in straight sets, losing 2-6, 4-6. Ivee Sickorez could not find her groove at the third singles spot and lost 0-6, 1-6.
Both doubles teams fell. Sonia Hellwig and Dolfina Allan were bested 1-6, 2-6, and Maile Biehl and Jamie Geiszler lost 3-6, 4-6.
