Over The Bar

Mashpee High’s Stella Stecei clears the bar in her first-ever high jump for the girls’ track and field team. Stecei finished in third place.

The Mashpee High girls’ track and field team ran its second meet of the season on Tuesday, March 23, at Horne Stadium against Middleboro. The larger Sachems squad scored an 18-73 victory over the Falcons.

Hailey Garcia had a strong day for the Falcons, scoring the team’s two first-place victories. She was the winner in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet even, and also took first in the 55m dash, running a time of 7.93 seconds.

Stella Stecei had never participated in the high jump before. She hadn’t even tried leaping over the bar until 30 minutes before the meet when she gave it her first attempt. Later, in the actual meet, she did it again and was able to earn third place for the Falcons with a jump of 4 feet and 4 inches.

Callia Eaton placed in two events for the Falcons in events she had tried before. Eaton was second in the 600m race with a time of 1:57. She also placed third in the 55m dash in 8.27 seconds.

Caroline Shields was third overall in the 600m race. She ran a time of 1:59.

Mashpee will be back in action at home this Tuesday, March 30. The team will square off against Hull High School on that day.
