A late charge by the Barnstable-Mashpee United women’s soccer team made things very interesting in the waning moments before the final whistle at Falmouth High School on Tuesday, July 9.

Undefeated Falmouth had laid waste to United in the previous meeting between the clubs two weeks prior, winning a 5-0 decision on that night. In the return match United made it much closer, but the end result was the same, with Falmouth taking a 3-2 victory to move to 6-0 overall on the season while United fell to 1-5 overall.

Goals by Falmouth’s Hannah Willy, Delaney Markham and Torie Roulston highlighted Falmouth’s win.

Trailing 3-1 with five minutes to go, things got very interesting for the United team. A goal from Katie Salenius in the 85th minute shaved Falmouth’s lead to one. Salenius let one go from about 25 yards out that was out of the reach of Falmouth keeper Caroline Rapozo.

With their spirits lifted, United gained momentum and began to push. Rapozo had to make a nice stop on a long one-hopper from Amanda Dustin in the 87th minute and then Falmouth got a bit lucky with a minute to play when Bridget Botelho’s hard volley from the top of the box sailed wide of the net.

Falmouth grabbed the lead early in the game, just four minutes in on a great play up the left side by Hannah Willy. The former FHS Clipper opened up space and hit a perfect shot that got by backup goalie Olivia Rauss, who was filling in for Heather DeLude because the starter was running late due to traffic. Mashpee tied it in the 19th minute on a goal from Dustin, who intercepted a clear-out pass from Rachel Cumberland and popped it high over the goalie’s head, and under the bar, from 25 yards out.

A spectacular play from Delaney Markham gave Falmouth the lead back in the 25th minute. Markham ran onto a nice through ball right near the midfield stripe and turned on the jets, pulling away from the defense before slotting a nice ball into the back of the net. Roulston then made it 3-1 with a perfectly struck ball before the half.
