A children’s behavioral health consultant for the Barnstable County Department of Human Services, Barbara Domenic, briefed the Board of Regional Commissioners Wednesday, May 24, on an event hosted on May 12 by Senator Edward J. Markey and Centers for Disease Control director Rochelle Walensky on the mental health crisis impacting young people.
Dr. Walensky said 42 percent of students nationwide feel isolated and disconnected, and one in five high school girls have experienced sexual violence, with LGBTQ+ youth at higher risk of mental health issues. Sen. Markey has proposed legislation to improve online safety, which aims to combat the youth mental health crisis that has been labeled as an emergency by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
